The Monument to the Victims of the Great War was erected in 1928, in memory of the Portuguese soldiers killed in the 1914-1918 war. It is the work of the celebrated sculptor Henrique Moreira (1890-1979), whose other well known works in Porto include the completion of the ‘Heroes’ monument in the Mouzinho de Albuquerque gardens and the two marble statues representing Industry and Art in the city hall. The memorial is a combination of balanced architecture and sculpture and features a solitary soldier in battledress on the pedestal.
