The Wool Museum belongs to the University of Inner Beira who adapted the buildings of the former Real Fábrica de Panos (Royal Textile Factory). Established in 1764 by the Marquês de Pombal, in the reign of King José I whose coat of arms can be seen on the façade, the factory operated until 1885. During 1975, the remains of the vats of the former dye-house were discovered and restored. The museum is in three sections, the Pombaline Dye-Works of the old factory, the Covilhã wool industry in the 18th and 19th centuries and Woollen Cloths.
