Although Calheta de Nesquim is the second smallest parish in Lajes do Pico, it is still an important old port. Apart from being typical of the bases for whale hunting, with tug boats and elegant canoes that were much in use in previous centuries, it’s historic value is because this was in fact where the very first base for hunting the sperm whale was set up in 1876. The port contains a portrait gallery full of depictions of famous whalers.
