The Whale Museum (Museu da Baleia) is located in the small fishing village of Caniçal, approximately 26 km northeast of Funchal and just beyond Machico. Whaling has been prohibited in Madeiran waters since 1982 and this museum, opened in 1989, whilst recording the history of whale hunting is also dedicated to the protection of the species. One of the most interesting items on display is a life-size model of a whale, set next to a small fishing boat similar to those used for hunting. The size comparison highlights the dangers faced. Other items on display include harpoons, whale teeth and jaw bones and many photos and prints.
