Opened to the public in 1987, the water museum is housed in a former pumping station and contains four huge steam engines dating from 1880. One has been reconditioned as a working demonstration. In 1990 the museum was awarded first prize by the European Museums Council. The first water system from Roman times is explained, as is the rare and complex 1746 aqueduct system and the water control and chlorination of Lisbon’s water supply. The museum also houses cultural events and exhibitions.
