The city walls and turrets of Lagos, because of their length and fine state of preservation, are some of the most important in the Algarve. Built during the reigns of D. Manuel I, D. João III and Filipe I, they used to completely surround the city. The walls were considerably restored in 1960 at the time of commemorations for Henry the Navigator. Important aspects include the Bulwarks and the Gates of: Santa Maria, Praça de Armas, Conceição, Alcaria (Freiras), Porta dos Quartos, Santo Amaro (Paiol), São Francisco and the Tower of Trem. From the turrets there are wonderful views of the city.
