The perimeter walls and outbuildings of the City of Elvas are an impressive monument in their own right, as well as forming part of the fortification network. The outer fortifications surrounding Elvas have the shape of an irregular twelve-sided polygon with seven ramparts and four half ramparts. Each of the ramparts is an impressive feat of mediaeval defensive architecture. The keep rises high up above the hill. The complete city defensive system includes the forts of Santa Luzia and Graça. From a distance the entire town looks like an impregnable fortress.
