Starting at the Largo da Portagem by the Ponte de Santa Clara, take the Rua de Ferreira Borges with its restaurants to the busy Praça do Comércio, where you will find Santiago church. Take the Rua Visconde da Luz which leads to the Praça 8 de Maio and the Santa Cruz church and carry on up the Rua de Sofia, to the 16th century churches of Carmo and Grace. Nearby is the Pátio da Inquisição a reminder of the Inquisition. You will pass streets with intriguing old names such as Rua da Formalhinha (Street of the Small Furnace).
