Located about 39 km northwest of Viseu in the Lafões valley, the town of Vouzela is regarded as one of the most attractive in the Beiras region. It has a rich collection of monuments and buildings, including the mother church, which is a National Monument, the 18th century chapel of São Gil, a Roman Bridge and a pillory. The Chapel of Our Lady of the Castle is 3 km to the south on a 500 metre high hill, offering great panoramic views. Vouzela also has the megalithic Pedra Escrita of Serrazes, a dolmen covered with mysterious geometrical symbols.
