The university, founded as a Jesuit college in 1551, was built in the Italian Renaissance style. Granted university status in 1559, it was closed in 1759 as a result of the hatred of the Marquês de Pombal and the Jesuit dissolution order in Portugal. It was only used as a university again in 1979 . The university church of Nossa Senhora da Conceiça was consecrated in 1574. The elegant marble cloisters and classroom entrances decorated with tile panels representing each of the subjects taught are notable features.
