In 1815 José Ferreira Pinto Basto acquired the Quinta da Ermida mansion about 10 km south of Aveiro and then the 100 acre estate around it. He opened his porcelain factory in 1824 and the estate and workers’ village developed over the balance of the 19th and 20th centuries. Apart from the museum (see separate entry), a 19th century palace was built, which has magnificent gardens overlooking the Aveiro estuary. In the village, the late 17th century chapel of Nossa Senhora da Penha de França with its amazing interior (see sparate entry) is just one of the items of interest.
