On the high ground in the northern part of Viseu is the archaeological site of Cava de Viriato, which was the site of a Roman camp during the 1st and 2nd centuries BC. It is said the town gets its name from the Roman term ‘viso’, meaning good view, and it is a splendid viewpoint. There is a bronze statue of the Lusitanian hero, Viriathus, surrounded by five shepherds, the work of sculptor Mariano Benliure. Viriathus allegedly drove the Romans off this hill in 200BC. The site is octagonal in shape and about 2 km in circumference.
