Located approximately 34 km northwest of Bragança, the town of Vinhais was founded in the 13th century and is on the edge of the Parque Natural de Montesinho (see separate entry). There are fine views of the park from Cidadelha hill and the viewpoint of St Anthony’s Chapel. Attractions in Vinhais include São Facundo church, founded by the Goths, the São Francisco convent, an attractive fountain and the ruins of a castle. At Tuizelo, about 11 km north of Vinhais, is the Nossa Senhora dos Remédios Carmelite Sanctuary. The town is famous for its cuisine, particularly its sausages and game dishes.
