Located about 30 km northwest of Miranda do Douro, the town of Vimioso was in the frontier region, which was of great importance for the defence of Portugal against Castilian invaders. The area has been inhabited from prehistoric times, as is evidenced by the remains found on Atalaia hill which overlooks the town. The marble quarries of Santo Adrião are worth visiting, as are the remains of the 13th century Algoso castle, built overlooking a sheer drop of 681 metres, which was destroyed in the 18th century. The 16th century parish church and Roman bridges nearby are other attractions.
