The Vilar de Frades Church is located in Areias de Vilar about 8 km east of Barcelos. Rebuilt in the 16th century, one of several modifications, it is regarded as one of the best examples of Manueline architecture in the north of Portugal. It still has the fine original 11th century Romanesque portal and the azulejos that cover the walls of two of its five chapels date from 1742. The old Benedictine monastery the church served, was destroyed by fire in 1898; however, two of its cloisters remain. The fountain is from the 17th century.
