A visit to Vila Verde, about 12 km north of Braga, gives visitors the opportunity to see some of the beautiful rustic scenery of Portugal. Vila Verde is in the heart of a very fertile region where the River Homen joins the River Cávado and is a thriving centre for handicrafts, winemaking and cattle breeding. In addition to pottery and wickerwork, the traditional lover’s handkerchief (lenço de namorado) is made locally. The Torre de Penegate located about 10 km west of the town, near the village of Carreiras, was a 14th century three storey, quadrangle shaped, fortress and residence.
