From Alvito it is only a short car journey to the quaint village of Vila Ruiva, but to really appreciate the Alentejo countryside it is worth making a small detour and passing through Albergaria dos Fusos. By taking this route you will be able to see the manor house of Água de Peixes and the roman bridge that was once part of the road from Pax Julia (Beja) to Ebora (Évora). In Vila Ruiva the main church is of mediaeval origin and decorated with beautiful frescoes. The town also contains a museum dedicated to social insects.
