Vila Pouca de Aguiar is located approximately 33km northwest of Vila Real, near the Alvão Natural Park (see separate entries). The area around contains remains from the Iron Age settlement of Castro de Cidadelhe and the cobbled streets and bridges are evidence of the Roman occupation. The old buildings and manor houses are also signs of days gone by, when the town was very popular with the aristocracy. The area is probably best known now for the sparkling Pedras Salgadas water, which has been bottled nearby since 1893 and is sold all over Portugal.
