The small hamlet of Vila Nova is one of the oldest settlements of the island. Water has always been abundant in this area and, by the end of the 19th century, the village had around 14 fountains. For this reason, it is not surprising to find old water mills along the Ribeira d’Agualva, where once as many as 48 mills were working. There is also a beautiful late 19th-century ‘império’, whose façade features three interesting Gothic-like double arches and two forged-iron balconies in front of the windows. The village’s small fishing harbour has an old stone ramp and a natural swimming pool cut in the rocks.
