Founded in the 13th century by King Afonso III, the town of Vila Nova de Famalicão is approximately 16 km northwest of Santo Tirso. Its attractions include the Bernardino Machado Museum, Palacete Barão de Trovisqueira (tel +351 252 377 733) and the Cupertino de Miranda Foundation Museum near the Tourist Office. The Carmelite sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Carmo is on top of Monte de Água Levada at Lemenhe north of the town. It has allegorical images of Senhora do Carmo, a stone altar and Friary House.
