Vila Franca do Campo, the first capital of São Miguel, was partially destroyed by an earthquake. A picturesque fishing town, until 1518 it was the most important commercial harbour but in 1522 a strong earthquake swallowed much of the town. After this calamity the town was rebuilt and expanded to west. A survivor of the quake, the São Miguel church is a 15th century chapel. Also worth visiting are the Sao Pedro church from the 17th century, the Santo André church from the 16th and the Sao Francisco Convent, reformed and extended after the destruction of the original by the earthquake.
