Alter do Chão was founded on the road between Lisbon and Merida in Spain. During the Roman occupation it was called Abelterium and the region is rich in archaeological remains from the period. Some of the best examples are the beautiful bridge at Vila Formosa and the public baths at Ferragial d´El Rei. Spanning the River Seda, the Roman bridge of Vila Formosa is a robust six-arched construction situated 12 km to the west of Alter do Chão.
