The ancient and attractive town of Vila Flor is situated about 24 km northwest of Torre de Moncorvo. Originally known as Póvoa de Além-Sabor, its name was changed by King Dinis in the 13th century; only ruins and the Porta de Dom Dinis remain of the castle and walls he built. Attractions include the mother church, rebuilt in Baroque style in the 17th/18th centuries, the Dom Berta Cabral Museum and the nearby Aquas Bem Saúde spa. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Assumption is at Vilas Boas, 7.5 km to the northwest, and the Peneireiro dam lies southwest of the town.
