This charming old 17th century palace, built for the Carvalho family, was refurbished in 2005 and a cultural centre was added. In 1854 the palace was used to stage the first Industrial and Trade Exhibition and Queen Maria II stayed there on her visit to Guimarães. The granite statues of the early kings of Portugal can be seen and the palace is surrounded by beautiful gardens, which are open to the public, containing a baroque fountain. The centre stages concerts, conferences, temporary exhibitions, opera, and theatrical productions.
