Vila do Porto is the capital of Santa Maria. It is located in a large bay surrounded by cliffs and protected by two ancient forts. The town has two distinct districts, which are separated by the parish church, the Igreja Matriz da nossa Senhora da Assunção. The older district, found below the church, still reflects the past splendour of the town. It has maintained its medieval character, marked by the original layout of its streets and alleys. The newer district above the church has a different character altogether and stretches to the sides of a wide single road.
