The 16th century Igreja Matriz of Vila do Conde is in the centre of town near the market. It is the church of John the Baptist and is notable for its ornate Manueline entrance, the work of the Spaniard João de Castilho. He was also partly responsible for both the Batalha and Jerónimos monasteries. The belfry is an addition from the 17th century. Inside, the gilded wood pulpit is of interest. Take a look at the unusual 16th century pillory in the square; it is in the shape of an arm with a thrusting sword symbolizing justice.
