The narrow stone paved streets of the historic centre of Vila do Conde are attractive. Whilst at the Igreja Matriz pay a visit to its Sacred Art Museum and note the old town hall. Other interesting churches include the Misericórdia and the St Francis, which is across the River Ave at Azurara and dates from 1518. In the Bagunte area are a Romanesque bridge and Castro de Bagunte, the remains of a fortified settlement from the first millennium to the 4th century AD. The 17th century St John the Baptist fort is at the mouth of the River Ave.
