The fishing town of Vila Praia de Âncora, 11 km south of Caminha, becomes a popular seaside resort in summer and was of importance on the pilgrim route to Santiago da Compostela. The chapel of Santo Isidoro is on the old beach and features a fine 17th century altar. Forte da Lagarteira, which still displays pieces of artillery, is close to the tiny harbour. Of greatest interest is the megalithic Dólmen da Barrosa which dates from the third millennium BC and is a national monument. The 13th century church of São Pedro de Varais is nearby (see separate entry).
