The presence of Romans in the Torres Novas region is proved by the Vila Cardílio ruins, located about 3 km southeast of the town. Dating from the 4th century AD, inscriptions in the ruins have established the name of the site. Excavations started in 1962 have yielded coins, ceramics, bronze items, jewellery, Assyrian and Egyptian glass works and a statue of Eros. Some of these items are displayed in the Carlos Reis Museum in Torres Novas. There are also some splendid baths, polychrome mosaics and the remains of an under floor heating system.
