Three mediaeval gates open into Faro’a historic centre: Arco da Vila, Arco do Repouso, and Arco da Porta Nova. Inside these gates and remaining city walls is an area known as Vila-Adentro (Inner Town). Ben Bekr, a 9th century Muslim prince who ruled the area, ordered defensive walls to be erected. It was then the Porta Árabe (Arab Gateway) was built and which can still be found in the Arco da Vila (Town Archway). After the Faro’s destruction in the 1755 earthquake and their loss of importance for military defence, the walls were progressively integrated into new buildings.
