The Spa town of Vidago lies 17 km southwest of Chaves and is famous for its therapeutic waters. The spas are recommended for the cure of diseases of the digestive system, the skin and the nervous system and contain bicarbonate, sodium, fluorine and carbon dioxide. Water from some sources is used in the cure of allergies such as asthma and migraine. The Vidago Palace, once a favourite of royalty is set in beautiful park and lake surroundings and undergoing major renovations which will include full spa facilities. It is due to reopen in the second half of 2008.
