The building housing the Vicentes Photographic Museum was, from 1856, the home and studio of Vicente Gomes da Silva (1827-1906), a pioneer of photography in Portugal. The studio was used by four generations of the Vicentes family until acquired, including contents, by the Madeira Government in 1979. After restoration, the museum opened in 1982; its exhibits include items from other collections and total more than 800,000 negative proofs as well as cameras and photographic equipment. The photographs provide an invaluable historical record of the island and its people as well as pictures of famous visitors, including Winston Churchill and George Bernard Shaw.
