Those fascinated by things maritime will enjoy Viano do Castelo with its marina (see separate entry), old fishing harbour, shipyard and commercial port. The town’s original name was Viana da Foz do Lima (town at the mouth of the Lima) and, like many of the cities and towns on the Portuguese coast, it evolved from a small fishing village. During the Age of Discoveries, with the growth of the Portuguese navy, it became a major port. The busy fishing harbour is distinguished by its antiquity and is next to the shipyard established in 1944, which has a good international reputation.
