Built to relieve pressure on the 25 April Bridge and opened on 20th March 1998, this amazing cable-stayed bridge crosses the Tagus River and connects the suburb of Sacavém on the north to the south bank near Montijo. It was completed in time for Expo 98, the World Fair which celebrated the 500th anniversary of Vasco da Gama’s discovery of the sea route to India. Some 17.2 km in total length, it has a suspended section 47m high near the Sacavém side, the main bridge being 0.83 km long. A good viewing point is from the Expo 98 cable car.
