Located at Algés, about 9 km east of Oeiras, the Aquário Vasco da Gama was inaugurated in 1898 with the support of King Carlos I (1889-1908). He promoted oceanographic research and was also keen to encourage public interest in the riches of the sea; a room in the museum is dedicated to him. Apart from the living species on display, there are numerous embalmed species, including sharks and marine birds and flora, shells also feature prominently. The museum is a particular favourite with children and the explanations are simple but complete.
