The countryside surrounding the town of Alcoutim has spectacular and beautiful scenery, and it is worth driving through just for the views alone. Dotted amongst the hills are some delightful small towns well worth visiting and Vaqueiros is one of them. The streets that frame the towns small, white church are as picturesque today as when they were first built. The church is an elegant building dating from the 16th century. The retable of the main altar and the "altar das Almas" (altar of souls) have 16th century painted wooden panels.
