Located approximately halfway to Chaves, and 24 km northwest of Mirandela, is the town of Valpaços. Although the municipality was only founded in the 19th century, the many remains prove that it was inhabited both in prehistoric times and by the Romans. Attractions include the mother church, the Pinto Leite (Arch) manor house, which has a Renaissance chapel and the nearby Nossa Senhora dos Remédios sanctuary. There are many fine manor houses in the area and at Carrazedo de Montenegro, 17 km southwest of Valpaços, the Igreja Matriz of St Nicholas has an attractive Baroque façade.
