The rock art of the Vale do Côa Archaeological Park dates back to the Upper Paleolithic Age and covers 25,000 years of history. The site was investigated for a dam in 1989, which would have submerged part of this heritage. Public protest eventually prevailed in 1996 and the world’s largest collection of open-air rock art was preserved. UNESCO classification as a World Heritage site in 1998, led to the formation of Vale do Côa Archaeological Park and the National Rock Art Centre. There are three centres, Canada do Inferno, Ribeira de Piscos and Penascosa but visits must be booked in advance.
