The Vale de Flamengos is an attractive area full of colourful plantations, flowers and picturesque houses. The Capelo road, leading from the valley to the southern coast, offers one of Faial’s most beautiful sights – Varadouro. This is a fascinating bay, dominated by the hill of Castelo Branco, with black rock tips, vineyards and flowers. With a pleasant micro-climate and a swimming pool, surrounded by a group of rock formations, Varadouro has hot water springs with beneficial properties in temperatures around 35,5ºC (96ºF).
