Urzelina is a charming centre and has some beautiful small bays that make it the island’s most popular bathing venue during the summer months. The town was almost completely rebuilt after a devastating earthquake when the Pico de Esperança erupted in 1808. From the old church all that remained was the bell tower that sticks out curiously from the lava, surrounded by hibiscus, aloes, rose bushes, banana and other exotic trees. Near the small harbour, which has quite a large swimming pool, remains of a 17th-century fort can still be seen.
