A landmark of Coimbra, which can be seen from all over the city, the University tower was designed by the Italian architect Antonio Canevari (1681-1764) and completed in 1733. It replaced an earlier tower built by Jean de Rouen in 1561. The richly decorated tower stands 34 metres high and is equipped with three bells, the largest of which is called ‘a cabra’ (the goat). There are clocks on the top storey, which leads to a terrace with panoramic views of the city.
