The village of Ucanha, approximately 15 km southeast of Lamego, is famed for its fortified bridge, the only one in Portugal and a rare and beautiful legacy of Gothic civil architecture. Believed to date back to the 12th century, it has certainly been documented since the 13th century. Ucanha, meaning small stone house, is claimed to be the oldest town in the area and the bridge was part of a medieval road linking Lamego to the Riba-Côa region. From 1465 until 1527 the fortified bridge was under the control of the wealthy local Cistercian Monastery of Santa Maria de Salzedas.
