Located behind the City Hall and the Avenida dos Aliados, the early 19th century neo-classical Trinidade Church is one of the most imposing in the city. Occupying the whole block, the church was designed by Carlos Amarante (1748-1815), although it is thought that the design was altered in 1818 by José Francisco. Building work was only finally completed at the beginning of the 20th century. Internally, the marble work and carved and gilded woodwork is outstanding, in particular the high altar by José Marques da Silva. The church stages many concerts and recitals.
