This moving monument is in the Madeira Theme Park (see separate entry). A tribute to Madeirans throughout the world, it is the work of local sculptor Amândio de Sousa and consists of a red stone covered wall, with two brass geometric elements on the front. It carries the words of American writer John dos Passos (1896-1970), whose father was Madeiran. ‘It is possible to take a man out of his country, but you can never take his country out of his heart’. On the back of the sculpture is a world map showing the location of the major Madeiran emigrant communities.
