On the estuary side of the Tróia peninsula is the Roman town of Cetóbrigia, which was once a port and the site of a fish-salting business. The settlement eventually moved to the other side of the river and gave its name to the city of Setubal. Some very important finds have been made since excavations by the Lusitanian Archaeological Society began in 1850. The main visible features which can be visited are fish-salting tanks as large as 3 metres square, port buildings, tombs and baths with traces of mosaic and marble lining.
