Tresminas Archaeological Park is about 19 km east of Vila Pouca de Aguiar and contains one of the largest Roman gold mines. Active from the time of Emperor Augustus (27 BC - 14 AD) until Septimus Severus (193-211 AD), mining was open-cast and the complex network of galleries can be seen. Water was supplied by aqueducts from the River Tinhela and the Ribeira da Fraga. There are many Roman remains in the area including roads, bridges and the hill fort at Cidadelha de Jales. The galleries can only be visited if accompanied by a guide (tours must be booked in advance).
