Situated upstairs in the Cathedral is the Treasury and Sacred Art Museum. Amongst the interesting exhibits are an 11th century Arab ivory box, the 16th century manueline style chalice of Archbishop Diogo de Sousa, 18th century carved choir stalls and the iron cross used in 1500 by the explorer Pedro Alvares Cabral in Brazil, to celebrate South America’s first mass. There also rare azulejo tiles, embroidered vestments and statues on display. Before leaving the Cathedral note the statue, sheltered under an ornate Gothic canopy, of Nossa Senhora do Leite, the Virgin Mary with Jesus at her breast.
