Located about 25 km northwest of Amarante, the former Benedictine Monastery of Travanca, dating from 970, is attributed to Dom Gascão de Moniz, a contemporary of King Ferdinand I of Castile and León. The church was rebuilt in Romanesque style in the 12th century and has three aisles and an imposing crenellated side tower; an apse was added in the 16th century. It is noted for its 12th century sculpture and the capitals depicting mythical animals include a dragon. The belfry seen in the churchyard was removed from the medieval tower in the 1930s, when the monastery underwent renovation.
