Trancoso is a place to reflect on history whilst wandering through narrow stone streets. King Dinis created Portugal’s first tax-free fair here in 1304, celebrated on the 15th August each year. There was a large Jewish population in the 15th century and houses survive with a wide door for commerce and narrow door separating the living quarters. The House of the Black Cat (Casa do Gato Negro), in the Largo Luís de Albuquerque, was the synagogue and rabbi’s home. In the Largo da Praça, take time to visit the Romanesque Santa Marinha church from the 12th/13th centuries.
