There was a fortress on this site as early as the 10th century and it became Portuguese when the castle was captured from the Moors by Afonso Henriques in 1160. It was much reinforced and improved over the centuries, notably in 1282 when King Dinis commissioned the town walls. The most impressive of the four gates to the town is the main entrance, the Porta d’El Rei. Named after King Dinis, it carries his coat of arms and that of the municipality. There are eleven existing towers, one of which is the strangely shaped keep. The castle offers outstanding views.
